N256 provides applied systems engineering/mission engineering for 2 Combatant Commands (CCMDs), to include NORAD/USNORTHCOM and HQ US Space Command. N256 is a vibrant element of the N250 Joint Staff / Combatant Command (JS/CCMD) Division emphasizing collaboration and sponsor mission orientation. This position will focus initially on accelerating space control and other space-domain effects (kinetic and/or non-kinetic) and associated mission system data into multi-domain planning and visualization systems, for Joint mission sets.
As a data science engineer on the USSPACECOM project, you will work closely with department, project, task, and site SMEs to apply a wide variety of data science skills (e.g., data ingestion, fusion, analytics, visualization, dissemination) for advancing resilience and deterrence options for space systems and missions. Depending on the challenge at-hand, you may be expected to conduct any of the following methodologies: agent-based modeling, reinforcement learning, natural language processing/large language models, neural networks, optimization, probability & statistics, design of experiments, regression analyses, classification & clustering, simulation, Bayesian modeling. You will work with operations research and applied systems engineering experts and will be expected to learn/apply these disciplines over time, as well.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Creatively apply advanced problem-solving skills to complex interdisciplinary problems across the defense and national security sectors to gain insight for sponsors.
Use automated tools to resolve data collection, data wrangling, and data fusion challenges involving disparate data sources, formats, and missing data.
Apply advanced analytical, algorithmic, and mathematical techniques to provide high-quality modeling solutions supporting difficult policy, acquisition, and operational challenges.
Effectively communicate analysis results and supporting visualizations to all sponsor audiences with varying levels of technical expertise.
Work closely with USSPACECOM, related sponsors, and MITRE colleagues supporting mutual problem sets to identify enterprise solutions.

Basic Qualifications:
Typically Bachelors degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Operations Research, Mathematics, or related field and at least five years of experience in one or more of the following broad technical disciplines: artificial intelligence, data science, operations research, or 3 years and a Masters degree; or a PhD with relevant experience who can immediately contribute at this job step or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
Experience in applying principles, concepts, methods and tools for implementing: AI/ML algorithms, data analytic modeling, statistical analysis, & operations research
Experience in using tools and techniques to conduct: data wrangling, AI development, mathematical optimization, probabilistic & statistical modeling, and simulation studies.
Active TS/SCI Clearance.
This position has an on-site requirement of 5 days a week.
Preferred Qualifications:
Graduate degree in Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Operations Research, Mathematics, or equivalent knowledge and skills in a related field with 5-8 years of experience.
Demonstrated ability with at least one modern computer programming language/analytical package: Python, R, Java, MATLAB. Python highly preferred.
Demonstrated ability to use at least one simulation, optimization, or business intelligence platform (e.g., Gurobi, CPLEX, Stella, Simio, Arena, AnyLogic, SimPy, RSimmer, SAS, Tableau, PowerBI).
Expertise in a wide range of Machine Learning (RL/DL) tools (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, Ray).
Experience with databases & Big Data challenges and solutions (e.g., SQL, MongoDB, Hadoop, Spark, Storm).
Ability to lead technically challenging tasks, be a collaborative teammate, and develop technical talent and teams via mentoring.
Familiarity with DoD organization and missions, the role of the Joint Staff, CCMDs, Military Service Components, operational environments and threats.

Salary compensation range and midpoint:
$115,000 - $144,000 - $173,000 Annual
