Field Service Technician - Steel Industry

Kelly Engineering is seeking a skilled Field Service Technician for a DIRECT HIRE position with a leader in producing machinery for steel plants, industrial heat recovery equipment and boilers, as well as shunting locomotives and military equipment company to travel to customer sites! Ideal Candidate:

  • Minimum 2 years experience in Field Service
  • Mechanical and/or Electrical troubleshooting and install experience preferred
  • Industry experience in Steel, Galvanizing, or Industrial Machinery Manufacturing
  • Experience in Planning and Commissioning
  • Ability to read and understand construction drawings and documentation
  • Able to travel to customer sites nationwide (This includes payout for per-diem and premiums)


Essential Duties and Responsibilities


Construction Preparation:

  • Learn and follow all ISO processes and procedures.
  • Read and understand Company scope of responsibilities for the project.
  • Collect all drawings and documentation for on-site services.
  • Review layout and detailed drawings for preparation.
  • Review installation manual for proper sequencing.
  • Ensure the installation manual accuracy and completeness.
  • Submit corrections to installation manuals as necessary.
  • Develop sequences and planning for construction.


Construction On-Site:

  • Review and verify components during OPI.
  • Verify mechanical devices for movement and function.
  • Maintain an active punch list.
  • Fill out all applicable documentation (SDR, FIN, Time sheets).
  • Verify and comment on piping components and locations.
  • Verify and comment on cable trays and wiring runs.
  • Review progress of erection, contractors, schedule.
  • Advise contractors on proper assembly/construction sequences.
  • Hold regular construction progress meetings with customers.
  • Verify and comment on instrumentation component locations.
  • Conduct construction kick-off meetings.


Commissioning Preparation:

  • Read and understand scope of responsibilities for commissioning phase.
  • Collect all drawings and documentation for on-site services.
  • Review commissioning check list for accuracy.
  • Ensure the commissioning check list completeness.
  • Submit corrections to the commissioning check list.
  • Develop sequences and planning for commissioning.


Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ability to make changes and corrections to PLC programming and HMI interface pages.
  • Develop PLC programs for process control.
  • Design and develop electrical control devices and cabinets for process control.


Commissioning On-site:

  • Review and verify components during OPI.
  • Verify mechanical devices for movement and function under power.
  • Hold regular commissioning progress meetings with customers.
  • Review progress of commissioning contractors.
  • Advise contractors of desired function responsibilities.
  • Verify and comment on instrumentation component locations.
  • Verify and comment on piping components and locations.
  • Verify and comment on cable trays and wiring runs.
  • Perform cold function test and verifications of devices.
  • Troubleshoot malfunctioning equipment and processes.
  • Conduct I/O check out.
  • Set up remote mounted devices/components for operation.
  • Conduct on-site team meetings and update planning daily.
  • Start up equipment for hot function test.
  • Knowledge and application of protective atmospheres and thermal processes.
  • Ability to perform tuning and optimization of PLC programming.
