Description

The School Liaison will work with refugee children and their families to navigate through the school system during the school term. This includes coordinating back-to-school drives to collect resources for the children. The School Liaison will also develop activities designed to keep the children intellectually active during summer breaks.

Essential Functions

  • Conduct school orientation with parents with a post-test on orientation materials;
  • Identify eligibility of students already enrolled in school programs but who were not resettled by a refugee resettlement agency;
  • Develop a plan for education services for the student and their family;
  • Coordinate and arrange tours for refugee students and families, and accompany them on the tours;Work closely with school counselors, ESL teachers and social workers to monitor students' progress in both programmatic and ESL areas;
  • Conduct information sessions to educate the ESL teachers, parent liaisons, school social workers, school guidance counselors and principals about the refugee student population and the services;
  • Work closely with the volunteer coordinator to recruit, screen and supervise tutors and mentors as needed;
  • Arrange for interpreters and translation of materials as needed;
  • Arrange parent-teacher conferences and home visits to monitor parents' participation in students' education process;
  • Track, monitor and review students' ESL progress through the school year;
  • Provide referrals to relevant ethnic community services and programs as needed;
  • Arrange purchase and/or volunteer coordination to assist with collection of needed school supplies, computers and clothing (such as coats and shoes) for incoming students;
  • Coordinate quarterly collaboration meetings with area refugee resettlement agencies;
  • Engage students in after-school and/or summer remedial and recreational activities;
  • Maintain on-going relationships with each school, and relevant ESL teachers and counselors;
  • Assist with collection and transfer of necessary documents for cases seeking out-migration;
  • Prepare quarterly progress reports for submission to the Maryland or Virginia Office of Newcomer Services;
  • Attend all conferences, seminars, and meetings related to program activities;
  • Work as part of the program team and participate in staff meetings and in-service trainings;
  • Plan and oversee a yearly "Back to School Event" by partnering with a local congregation to hand out backpacks and school supplies at the end of summer before school begins;
  • Plan and oversee a yearly "Student Recognition Event" to recognize students who have completed their first year of school in the United States and those who have done well in school;
  • Provide orientations for new students covering several topics including but not limited to safety,
  • discipline in school, bullying, academic expectations, etc;
  • Provide academic support, including subject-specific tutoring, assistance with homework as needed, and facilitating computer classes at local libraries;
  • Provide summer English language practice, including tutoring, as well as, an in-home mentor for the family;
  • Facilitate and coordinate arts and cultural workshops, day trips and, fitness and sports;
  • Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

Education
Bachelor's degree (four-year college or technical school) required, in one of the following field(s) of study: social work, social services, or related field
Experience
One (1) plus years of experience in teaching or working with youth
Other Requirements
Valid driver's license;

Clean driving record;
A personal vehicle or access to a vehicle required;
FBI criminal background check;
Preferred Skills
Knowledge of the United States Resettlement Program;
ESL/ESOL/English teaching experience preferred;
A foreign language in addition to English preferred;
Knowledge of the U.S. resettlement program preferred;
Microsoft Applications (Access, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint).
