Position Overview

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 1:30 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.

Salary Range: $19.0970 - $23.1826/hour. Salary reflects Step 2 and Step 6 of a 7-step pay scale. Salary at hiring will be dependent upon the applicant's education, experience, and training.

Job Summary:

Under general supervision, performs a variety of semi-skilled work involved in the servicing, repair, and maintenance of automobiles, buses, trucks, and other motor driven equipment and vehicles.

Scope of Responsibility:

Incumbent follows prescribed procedures in performing duties. Working with limited supervision, incumbent performs work according to generally established principles. Work may include directing the work of other Fleet Services staff as part of a work crew.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Services automobiles, buses, trucks and other motor driver equipment and vehicles with fuel, oil, and lubricants.
  • Washes and steam cleans vehicles.
  • Repairs and changes tires.
  • Checks equipment and automotive batteries, coolants, and lubricants.
  • Moves vehicles and equipment from place to place, test drives and transfers vehicles, as required.
  • Observes and reports defective parts or operation of equipment serviced.
  • Provides road service and towing.
  • Performs minor welding duties.
  • Completes basic forms of services performed including work orders, mileage sheets, parts, and service books.
  • Sweeps and cleans garage, and performs snow removal.
  • Provides assistance and information to co-workers.
  • Maintains written records of repair and servicing of vehicles and equipment.
  • Travels to different worksites to perform maintenance duties.
  • Handles firearms and personal equipment for removal and security from police vehicles.
  • Performs facility security and lock up at end of work shift.


Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills

Required Qualifications and Skills:
  • One (1) year of specialized training beyond high school in the auto and truck repair and maintenance trades
  • Two (2) years of related experience, or equivalent
  • A valid Montana Class B Type 2 commercial driver's license with air brake endorsement or must be obtained within ninety (90) days of employment
  • Must be forklift certified or must be obtained within thirty (30) days of employment
  • Must provide own tools adequate to perform duties
  • Must be available to respond to emergency callback, as necessary


Physical Demands and Working Conditions

Work is indoors with occasional exposure to outside areas. Occasional physical effort involving lifting of 25 to 60 pounds is required. Intermittent (less than 15% of the time) lifting of amounts over 60 pounds required. Work requires high attention to detail or deadlines between 15% and 45% of the time. There is frequent exposure (45% to 70% of the time) to a disagreeable element, such as dirt, grease, odor, or unpleasant weather conditions. Driving is required frequently.
